Lucky Swinger
About four weeks before European Bike Week, Rick’s Motorcycles received a call from Kellermann to ask if they could provide them with a suitable exhibition bike, something special, a real eye-catcher. If you call Rick’s about that sort of thing, then you can normally expect some Softail conversion with XXL tires. But as it happens there was nothing like that available at the time, because as soon as such a bike is ready, it gets sold. And anyway, in Baden-Baden they had fancied for a long time to do something special of their own, which they have achieved with this Sportster. They expected all sorts of things, but an XL? Well, this one is very special indeed.
A Sportster with a swinging rear wheel fender has so far been extremely rare because the struts and the rear frame ends hardly allow a respectable solution. After the overwhelming success with the swinging Softail fender, the team in Baden-Baden started to develop a good looking solution. Like with the Softail version, the Sportster fender should also be possible to mount on the swingarm or frame without further welding work, saving the costs for having to again paint or coat it. And it should also be formed from stable sheet metal so that the later owner can enjoy the fender for life. The end result fits on all Sportster models from 2010. What can we say, the prototype was ready on time one week before the mega event!
When doing a rear conversion, a lot of other things have to be considered. Instead of a seat bench, the seat was exchanged for a minimalistic solo seat, and by the way, many aftermarket seats will be suitable for this. Under the seat is a frame cover with seat holder, which can be bought optionally.
The original belt cover also didn’t fit the Bobber look any longer, which was reason enough for Rick’s crew to also search for a solution matching the design, and find it in record time. At the front they fitted a short Bobber fender over the tire, which now makes the Bobber look seem perfect.
Up to here we have now introduced all new developments, but Rick’s also has a large parts program with which this Bob job was given many detailed accents. The adjustable brake and clutch levers are not only an optical necessity. The lever length and the distance to the grip can also be adjusted individually on Rick’s levers without any problems. Whether small hands, short fingers, thick or thin gloves and personal taste, all can be accommodated. The rubberized grips are, of course, also from Rick’s parts program.
The same applies to the air filter, which is an optical delight and called “Good Guys”. But the filter interior is just as important, using a K&N branded filter. When constructing the housing interior, the whole air intake was optimized. A real Rick’s performance part, which in connection with an optimized mapping can perform miracles.
