The Big “B” Breakout 300
Harley-Davidson’s „Breakout“ models are well-known for their distinctive stretched and elegant lines. A stock design feature that often is further enhanced by the Rick’s Motorcycles team, yet not always at the tailend: Wide tires – and even a 300 sized rubber – are still reason enough to interpret the rules…
The stock dimensions have been largely retained as they were: 2.370 mm length and stock 34° steering head angle. The stock trail of 145 mm can vary slightly, which is depending on the height level when using the Airride system. Again, when customizing this „Breakout“, the Rick’s Team reached deep into their bag of tricks. Rick’sMotorcycle is famous for its wide tyre conversions well beyond Germany and Europe. Swingarm kits for the „Twin Cam“ models are standard Rick’s parts for decades, the tyre centralized in the rolling chassis. When introduced, custom swingarms for the new Milwaukee-Eight Softail models followed, allowing to realize XXL tyre widths, still high on the list of customer demands. The real challenge of these conversions is not the wide tyre, but how to get the drive belt past the tyre? No problem for the Baden-Baden based shop: Rick’s divides the standard long belt into two shorter ones: the jackshaft for the twin connecting pulleys is situated in the pivot point of the swingarm, thus eliminating all stress to both belts that usually applies to the stock single belt by suspension movement. This does sound simple, but requires great deal of precise customizing. But that’s what you expect from Rick’s Motorcycles.
New tire dimensions inevitably require new wheels: The choice fell on Rick’s established three-piece bolted „Seven Sins“ design wheels, sized in 3.5″ x 21″ at the front and a mighty 10.5 ” x 18″ at the rear end. Brake discs are also in-house Rick’s and are – as usual for all Rick’s Design Wheels – matching the particular wheel design. The rear brake disc has been relocated to the drive side for a clean look and a clear view of the Rick’s design wheel from the right side. Where it matters! A necessary and quite popular addition to the wider rear tire are Rick’s tailend conversions, as the stock fenders of a Harley are not designed for this dimension! Rick’s parts program offers various complete kits for this purpose, but in this case the clean look was asking for something special: The tailend is one solid sheet-metal fabricated piece, featuring two air-duct style „outlets“ to the rear and the frame tubing hidden by stretching the tailend as far forward as the tank. The custom-made seat neatly fits into the handcrafted part.
The stretched line continues in the perfectly executed tank extension, handcrafted to perfection in Rick’s pro sheet metal workshop. The stock tank is utilized for this conversion, retaining the stock capacity. However, the added drop-shaped „streamlining“ adds perfectly to the desired „stretch look“, neatly clearing cylinder heads of the M8 motor. If you’ve taken a closer inspection of the cylinder heads, the inscription on the heads reads: “Screamin! Eagle CNC Ported“. Which indicates Harley’s „Stage 4“ kit. That’s „hot stuff“! Such a kit includes CNC ported cylinder heads with performance valve springs, 64 mm throttle body, high flow injectors (5.5 g/s), 4.075” bolt-on cylinders, forged 11:1 compression high precision aluminium coated pistons and rings, SE8-515 cam, cam bearing upgrade, high performance tappets – plus multi-layer coated head gaskets, top end, cylinder base and cam cover gaskets, high performance clutch springs and plates. Pure performance! At Rick’s Motorcycles the in-house modern Dynojet performance test bench is able to tune and adjust the new high-performance components perfectly. Thanks to Rick’s Motorcycles own flow-optimised design airfilters, optimum oxygen supply to the fuel mixture is assured. At the emission end, a KessTech system with electronically adjustable sound management is doing a great job for the exhaust gases.
The rider „goes ape“ on a 30 cm high Apehanger handlebar by Rick’s Motorcycles, while gripping hard on Rick’s rubberised „Good Guys“ grips when the power kicks in! The rather unstylish rear of the stock headlight is now concealed with Rick’s headlight trim, specially designed for the new M8 „Breakout“ models. Thanks to the Rick’s forward-mounted controls, the rider can burn black lines onto the asphalt while being seated in a relaxed riding position.
